Information and Creative Technology BTEC Extended Certificate level 2 at Leicester College

Course description

If you have an interest in the latest ICT creative technologies, use a smartphone or a tablet and would like to create a phone app game, then this course is for you. During this study programme you will have the opportunity to be the creator and producer of IT technology products and systems. This is a one year study programme that is designed to provide you with the opportunity to study a wide range of IT subjects. ICT has become more visual and interactive since the development of smart phones and tablets. This course looks to develop your skills in an area that is fast developing. Future jobs will also desire/require a good understanding of new technologies. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

Course content

The course introduces you to the rapidly developing world of information technology. You will study a wide range of subjects that will consist of: The Online World - looking at social media, real-time communication, and instant messages. Technology Systems - learning about the computer system e.g. CPU, RAM, storage, GPU's and how data is carried between components in a PC. Software Development - You will learn the basic principles of computer programming and create your own programs. Mobile Apps Development - Create a phone app game! You will learn how to design, create and test an app using the Android language. Other units include: Digital Portfolio; showcase work on your website. Website Development: Create an interactive website. Computer Networks; Create and secure a network. Database Development; Create a relational database.

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 3 (D) or above is required, applications from learners who have a level 1 ICT/IT Diploma will be considered. If you have a real interest in ICT and are currently working on any of the subjects that we will be covering we would welcome an application.


Assessments will consist of two externally assessed exams, plus programme assessments. The exam will consist of multiple choice and short questions. The programme assessments will be marked internally.

Financial information

Material fee £40.00. If you are 16-19 there is a £40 material cost fee. Trip fees will be payable in year as and when the trips are organised.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the course you will have the opportunity to progress onto the level 3 programme in Games Development, Networking or General Computing. Those looking to enter the world of employment will be able to seek employment in entry level posts within the IT industry or progress into an IT and Telecoms Professionals apprenticeship programme at level 3.
