Art and Design (Graphic Design) Extended Diploma Level 3 at Leicester College
This established BTEC Extended Diploma in Graphic Design Level 3 course is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and understanding to become a creative graphic designer. It is a two-year programme providing a broad-based graphic design overview which can lead students into an exciting range of career areas including: graphic designer, illustrator, advertising, digital art and media art worker, fine art . The course is made up of 90 credits or 9 units per year and overall is equivalent to three A levels. The course is supported by regular trips to galleries and museums as well as location research trips. There is also a developing programme of industrial visits and live projects. Successful completion of the course means you will be eligible to study for a degree in a related field. The course is timetabled over 16 hours, four days per week. This is a demanding course and there is an expectation that learners will dedicate additional time to their studies. The course is an art and design based qualification so you will be expected to be able to and engage with drawing and other creative units. Assessment is continuous and achievement is closely monitored. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 (C) or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.
The course is predominantly a graphic design course with elements of interactive media covering the following subjects: ideas and concepts; drawing; design method; contextual studies; photography; screen printing; computers in art and design; and web design. The course covers the design process, and you will also be training on a range of latest industry software including Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. The second year units are: application, exploration and realisation in art and design; design methods in art and design; personal and professional development; digital Imaging computer manipulations; mixed media; design for advertising; and information graphics.
Standard entry to this course requires one good reference, 90% attendance at your last place of work or study, and four GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, including English and an art-related subject, Maths is desirable but not essential. You will also require a portfolio which demonstrates your suitability for your chosen course. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.
All units are assessed through practical assignments.You will receive formative assessments and feedback that will inform you of the grade you are working towards. We will set targets that inform you how to improve.There are no examinations or external assessments on this course.
Material fee £50.00. Up to £100 to cover the cost of kit and equipment as well as the cost of trips to galleries and museums.We have a student art shop that can supply the majority of materials.
This level 3 course allows successful learners to progress either into the creative arts industry or higher education in graphic design, or a range of allied subject areas. The course equips learners to enter the creative industries at a junior level. There will also be a an element of simulated work experience through live projects, competitions, and industrial assignments during year two of the course.
