Art, Design and Media (Visual Arts & Creative Media) - UAL Level 1 Diploma - 1 year at Longley Park Sixth Form College
This course has been designed to provide students with an introduction to the creative sector. This will enable you to make informed future progression choices while developing and applying your knowledge and acquiring a range of relevant practical, communication and personal development skills.
The course covers drawing, film making, graphics, photography, painting, animation and 3D design. You will complete projects which allow you to learn new skills and explore your own ideas using a range of art and design media. Assignments are based on real life briefs and you will find out about how professional artists and designers work. This means that you will get a real insight into the career routes available in Art & Design and Media Studies.
You will have access to excellent art and media facilities, including studio space, workshops, a kiln room, specialist art and design resources and materials and digital imaging. In media we have a suite of Applie iMacs and MacBook Pros, green-screen, 3D screening, digital SLR cameras and expert video equipment.
The final unit requires you to demonstrate an ability to use your knowledge, skills and understanding to successfully complete an assignment that involves greater self-direction in preparation for study at a more advanced level.
These are some of the areas you will study:
- Introduction to materials, processes and skills in art, design and media
- Introduction to contextual research in art, design and media

A number of specifications will be changing and prospectus entries are based on information we have to date. This means that course content may be subject to change.
You do not need to have a qualification in Art & Design or Media Studies but you should have a keen interest in either subject. If you have a portfolio of artwork or films you have made, you should bring it to interview.
You will be assessed throughout the course through the presentation of your sketch books and portfolio, including all your projects and coursework. There is no exam element.
Everything you must have to undertake the course will be provided by college. You may have to pay for extras such as trips/visits.
Students from this course can progress onto the UAL Level 2 Art and Media course or another Level 2 course in another subject.
