Physical Education A Level at The Harris Academy Orpington

Course description

This PE course is challenging and rewarding course as it explores the physical, psychological and social aspects of sport and physical education. Combining practical and theory components, this course allows for motivated sportsmen and women to develop their interests in the world of sport and physical education. There is a total of 3 exams in the specification equating to 70% of the grade – sat at the end of the 2 Year course. 30% of the grade is based on practical ability including analysis of performance.

Course content

This course is divided into four components. Each component is further sub divided into topic areas, these are shown below:

Physiological factors affecting performance:

  • Applied anatomy and physiology
  • Exercise physiology
  • Biomechanics

Psychological factors affecting performance:

  • Skill acquisition
  • Sports psychology

Socio-cultural issues in physical activity and sport:

  • Sport and society
  • Contemporary issues in physical activity and sport

Performance in physical education:

  • Performance or Coaching
  • Evaluation and Analysis of Performance for Improvement (EAPI)

The practical element of the course:

Students are internally assessed in one practical activity (either performing or coaching) and the Evaluation and Analysis of Performance for Improvement (EAPI). Students are required to demonstrate effective performance, the use of tactics or techniques and the ability to observe the rules and conventions under applied conditions.

In addition to a practical performance, students will be assessed in the Evaluation and Analysis of Performance for Improvement (EAPI). Students will observe a live or recorded performance by a peer in either their own assessed performance activity or another activity from the approved list. Through observation, learners will provide an oral response analysing and critically evaluating their peers’ performance.

Assessment

  • Physiological factors affecting performance -90 marks 2 hour written paper – 30% of overall course
  • Psychological factors affecting performance -60 marks 1 hour written paper – 20% of overall course
  • Socio-cultural issues in physical activity and sport -60 marks 1 hour written paper– 20% of overall course
  • Performance in physical education -60 marks Non-exam assessment– 30% of overall course

Physical Education lends itself to a range of careers in sports and fitness as well as other industries that you may not have considered before. Many nutritionists, physical therapists and chiropractors have A Level PE before moving onto University to study their specialised degree courses.
