Applied Science BTEC Level 3 at John Cabot Academy

Course description

Learn independently, learn analytical and practical skills.  Research actively and methodically, give presentations and be an active group member.  Read scientific and technical texts.

Course content

Year 1

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Science is equivalent in size to one A Level. There are 4 units of study of which 3 are mandatory (83%) and 2 are externally assessed (58%). 

Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science (externally assessed by exam in June)

Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques (internally assessed)

Year 2

Unit 3: Science Investigation Skills (externally assessed)

Final unit: Choice of one of the following units (internally assessed);

Unit 8: Physiology of Human Body Systems

Unit 9: Human Regulation and Reproduction

Unit 10: Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways

Unit 11: Genetics and Genetic Engineering

Unit 12: Diseases and Infections

Unit 13: Applications of Inorganic Chemistry

Unit 14: Applications of Organic Chemistry

Unit 15: Electrical Circuits and their Application

Unit 16: Astronomy and Space Science

Entry requirements

C grades in science GCSE or BTEC level 2 merit. Maths and English to C grade.


External assessment (58%) Internal assessment (coursework 42%)

Future opportunities

With a track record built over 30 years of learner success, BTEC Nationals are widely recognised by industry and higher education as the signature vocational qualification at Level 3. They provide progression to the workplace either directly or via study at a higher level. The UCAS points are widely accepted by non-Russell group universities.
