Business A Level at John Cabot Academy

Course description

Develop a can do attitude! Learn what it means to run your own business. Set one up from scratch. Manage people, resources and accounts. React, predict and make use of a dynamic and changing business environment. 

The new style A level courses are designed to be taught in a linear fashion over two years. The course is assessed through 100% examinations and there are three examinations that will take place at the end of the second year of study. This course is academic in nature and will be excellent preparation for students who wish to go and study at university. 

Course content

Year 1

3.1 What is business? 3.2 Managers, leadership and decision making 3.3 Decision making to improve marketing performance 3.4 Decision making to improve operational performance 3.5 Decision making to improve financial performance 3.6 Decision making to improve human resource performance 

Year 2

In year 2 we will revisit the topics we learned in year one in more depth but will also introduce the topics below.

3.7 Analysing the strategic position of a business (A-level only) 3.8 Choosing strategic direction (A-level only) 3.9 Strategic methods: how to pursue strategies (A-level only) 3.10 Managing strategic change (A-level only) Strategic decision making (A-level only)

Entry requirements

Grade B in English and Maths. Also either GCSE Business Studies Grade B or Distinction at Level 2 BTEC Business would be an advantage.


3 x externally assessed exams at the end of year 2.

Future opportunities

Many students go on to study BSc/BA Hons degrees in business related subjects.


Accountants; marketing or recruitment specialists; financial advisors; project managers or business management positions in a variety of areas and industries.
