Media Studies A Level at John Cabot Academy

Course description

Explore the impact of technology on our society and how the media shape our understanding of the world. Produce your own films! Study the Media; be a part of it!

Course content

Year 1

Foundation Portfolio: Students research, plan, film, edit and evaluate their own film opening, keeping an account of the whole project on a blog. 
Institutions and Audiences Exam: Students will be required to analyse a TV drama focusing on the representation of social groups and prepare a study of the film industry considering the impact of technology.

Year 2

Advanced Portfolio: Students research, plan, film, edit and evaluate their own production – music video or documentary - and produce accompanying marketing material. 
Critical Perspectives in Media: Students evaluate their skills development over the course, from Foundation to Advanced, with reference to relevant media theory. In addition, students study one topic in detail, exploring contemporary media issues and debates, focusing on the interaction between media institutions, texts and audiences. 

Entry requirements

GCSE English – C grade  and, if studied GCSE Media Studies – C grade.

Assessment

50% coursework - teacher marked and externally moderated; 50% exam - externally assessed.

Future opportunities

University degrees in media production, cultural studies or English. It will also be very useful for going on to study other creative/practical courses like photography or graphic design and courses such as business studies and marketing.
