Level 3 UAL Diploma Art & Design (specialising in Photography) 1 Year Programme at Cambridge Regional College

Course description

The UAL Awarding Body Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design in Visual Communication (photography) has been designed to provide the skills, knowledge and understanding to progress to the Level 3 Extended Diploma  
Study programme, higher education or employment.
The Visual Communication course provides the opportunity to explore traditional film based and digital photography, graphic design, editorial design, typography, design strategy, branding and marketing.

8 Mandatory units are delivered over one year. The Visual Communications (Photography) UAL L3 Diploma in Art and Design is the first year of the Visual Communications (Photography) - UAL L3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design. All mandatory units must be completed to progress successfully on to year two. All units are internally assessed by assignments set by your tutors and assessment grading is subject to internal and external moderation.
• a broad experiences in graphic image making, photographic digital and experimental film based techniques and team work communication skills delivered through collaborative projects with photographers, graphic designers, competitions, time-bound scenarios as well as working the wider creative industries across college and within the local community.  
• Structured and self-directed project management and independent study around self-promotion based within a dedicated Apple Mac, PC suites and photography studios.  

Entry requirements

• A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades 9 - 4 (A* - C), including English or Maths, and one of which must be in an art or design related subject or Level 2 BTEC Diploma, First Diploma Art & Design, UAL L2 Diploma in Art and Design.

In addition

• A portfolio of recent work must be presented at the Welcome Event that reflects your study of an arts related GCSE qualification achieved thus far and your interest in the arts area.

• Show at Welcome Event an interest in the Art & Design Industry.In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a Welcome Event/Interview.


Course work is continually assessed by a range of differentiated methods. Professional tutorial, self-assessment, peer review and panel reviews. A Formative assessment is recorded at the end of each term. Summative assessment is applied to your Final / Self-Initiated Art and Design Proposal this is graded as: Pass, Merit, Distinction.

There is regular one to one tutorial provision.

Employability skills and industry experience e.g. team working, self-promotion and survival skills, curating and analysing health and safety issues for site specific art/design work, project management, listening skills, adaptability and flexibility via live assignments, collaborative projects and entrepreneurial activity. Portfolio preparation for UCAS application and higher education interviews.
This qualification helps you to progress on to UAL L3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design Study programmes.

Students applying with full A-Level qualifications can add the UAL L3 Diploma Art and Design as part of their UCAS / university entry points to progress to study BA/BSc/FdA at a Higher Education institution or  Apprenticeships within the wider commercial/creative based industries and supported through Cambridge Regional College. Employment goal e.g. commercial photography assistant  or self-employment
