Maths Functional Skills : Level 2 at Gateway College
This course is designed to use maths in real life contexts. Students who are less comfortable with abstract maths often find they grasp the content of Functional Skills Maths more naturally. Emphasis is placed on practical resources and activities that reflect real life scenarios that a person may encounter and be required to solve using logic and problem solving, e.g. planning a holiday/day trip, calculating how to split the cost of a journey/holiday, finding the best deal when purchasing items, finding the best paid job, whilst also considering the pros and cons of each job, etc. Students will be taught how to adapt to unfamiliar scenarios too, as well as thinking through problems and making use of flow-charts or diagrams to support the thought process. We expect to have a collaborative team-work attitude in the Maths classroom where students support one another, building their own confidence through discussions and explanations and hence become more able mathematicians.
Students will be expected to come fully equipped to all lessons with a full Maths set and scientific calculator (these can be purchased from the college, if required).
There will be 3 hours of lessons (2x1.5hr) per week, with the option of workshops throughout the week. Workshops are where students can work in a supervised and supported environment with a teacher.
To further support learning, the Maths department have set up an independent learning area where learners are encouraged to come during their free periods. This could be to complete homework, work independently on filling their own gaps, completing practice papers or consolidating what they have already learnt. Resources will be made available throughout the year in this area as well as having access to computers which will enable students to learn using MathsWatch or MyMaths or any other Maths website.
This course is suitable for you if you have a grade E/grade 2 in GCSE Maths or pass Functional Skills Maths qualifications at Level 1.
Students will have one written examination at the end of the year. However, students who demonstrate a high level of commitment and Mathematical ability will have the opportunity to complete the exam early and then begin bridging towards GCSE and in exceptional cases, take the exam within the same academic year, if deemed appropriate.
Free to all home students.
