Finding Independence - Entry Level 1 at College of West Anglia
The Bridge to Independence courses are programmes of further education for students with severe learning difficulties and/or disabilities. The courses are designed for young adults who have the potential to progress and the enthusiasm to continue learning in a safe and supported setting. The aim of the Finding Independence course is to help students reach their potential through learning. The course is designed to prepare students for adult life, with support and guidance the students are encouraged to negotiate their own learning programmes, make choices and decisions and develop independence skills. The curriculum allows for experience in making drinks, cooking simple lunches, TITAN and personal and social development. Enterprise, work-readiness and employability skills are also part of the curriculum.
Whilst there are no formal entry requirements, learners are required to show a positive attitude to learning. Following a successful interview a taster session will be arranged. This will provide a further opportunity to assess whether the programme will be able to meet the needs of the student.
Assessment is an on-going process and is regular throughout the academic year.Initially students are assessed on an individual basis by their tutors. Progress is measured through subject specific targets and through the verification of completed units. Subject specific targets are agreed with the student according to their own individual needs. These targets are regularly reviewed and updated via the online PDP system. Students are given the opportunity to log in and view their own targets and progress regularly.
If you are under 19 on 31st August in the year you begin your programme, you will not have to pay a course fee; however, there may be additional resources fees and fees for materials, kits and trips. Please visit our website for full details.
