Vehicle - Body and Paint Repairs IMI Level 3 Diploma at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College

Course description

This study programme covers the basic technical needs to work in the motor vehicle repair industry and body and paint repair sector. It provides essential knowledge for paint technicians working on vehicles such as cars, vans in all kinds of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots. The body and paint course focuses on areas such as diagnosis and rectifying paint faults, mixing and matching colours.

Course content

You will complete a number of units which give you the essential skills and knowledge required for working in the industry. On the maintenance and repair course you will have an understanding of the different systems on a vehicle in order for it to operate (gained at level 2) this knowledge will be built upon to include the service and maintenance of the vehicle. On the body and paint course you will build on the basic skills, knowledge and awareness of the basic panel repair process.

Entry requirements

Successful completion of a level 2 refinishing course, GCSE Grades A - C, initial assessment levels level 2 - level 3 in English and Maths, good attendance and attitude to match.


You will be assessed carrying out a number of practical tasks in the workshop, there will also be in-class verbal and written assessments and a number of on-line assessments for all of your study programme elements (including English and Maths).

Financial information

You will require steel toe cap boots, overalls, pen/pencil, notepad/folder and a memory stick. In addition for body and paint students you will require an industry standard face mask for when painting in the booth (this is a personal piece of equipment - not to be shared)..

We offer a bursary that students can apply for help with costs that are associated with a course. This could be help with the cost of travel, books, materials, equipment, uniforms, childcare and examination and registration fees. Future opportunities

On successful completion of your study programme including English and Maths your next step will be to progress in to employment or a suitable apprenticeship where the work based elements would need to be achieved. You will have to have employment in the trade to access this opportunity.Currently in the planning stages is a level 4 advanced vehicle diagnostics and Management Competence qualification which could be your next step, again you would need to ensure you are employed in a company.

Further information

You will be required to attend 3 days per week as this is a full-time course, 95% attendance is essential. It is compulsory for you to attend all sessions including English and Maths Functional Skills and work experience.If you are in a position where you have GCSE grades A-C in English and Maths or equivalent functional skill qualifications at level 2, you will have the opportunity to increase your skills further by discussing and agreeing a suitable advanced qualification.
