Course description

Psychologists observe and measure behaviour and their therapies are based on scientific study. Psychology has links with many disciplines including biological, computer and forensic science as well as humanities such as sociology, philosophy, anthropology and even literature. It involves study of theory, empirical evidence and practical applications. This mix of disciplines helps to make psychology such a fascinating subject.

Course content

First year units include: Origins of psychology and approaches. research methods, memory, attachment, psychopathology and social influence including conformity and obedience.

Second year units include: Gender, biological rhythms and sleep, relationships, aggression, psychopathology (depression), psychology in action (media psychology), and research methods.

Future opportunities

Psychology is a very popular subject at university level; however, it is an equally useful subject for studying other subjects at higher education, for example: law or nursing. Careers relating to Psychology include: police, nursing, teaching, counselling, human resources and personnel. University study in Psychology can lead to careers in areas of Applied Psychology, including: clinical, educational, sports, criminal, forensic, counselling, environmental and organisational psychology.
