Business Studies A Level at Arnold Hill Academy

Course description

Why study this course?

Students will study business in a variety of contexts such as large and small, UK focused and global and service and manufacturing. The course will give students the opportunity to consider ‘What is business?’ They will also study the impact of managers, leadership and decision making as well as investigating the marketing, operational, financial and human resource performance of business. The study of strategic decision making will build on this as a function area, and is a key skill which is developed during the A Level course.

What support and enrichment will I get?

Students are welcome to attend lunchtime support sessions. Trips and speakers are organised to support the case study themes for that academic year. Students benefit from following business and international news and this is built into the course. Case studies and lessons are constantly updated to adapt to current events. The opportunity to take part in a number of competitions throughout the year e.g. Business Tycoon in association with The Peter Jones Foundation, Share Game and Business, Accounting and Skills Education Competition.

Entry requirements

In addition to the standard entry requirements for the Sixth Form, students should have achieved have a minimum of a grade 5 in Maths and English. You do not need to have studied Business at GCSE but we will look for a minimum Grade C in closely related subjects such as Economics, ICT, English Literature and Humanities subjects.


The AS Level course is assessed by two papers worth 50% each. The A Level course is assessed by three external exam papers worth 33.3% each.

Future opportunities

Business Studies students are well prepared to continue further studies in Business at University. During the A Level, team building, presentation, data analysis, problem solving and research skills will be developed which are qualities valued by both Universities and employers.
