Media Studies - A Level at Moulsham High School

Course description

The OCR Media Studies course aims to equip students with a range of skills to empower them as both consumers and creators of media texts. Knowledge of the media is increasingly valued and is an important aspect of so many careers in our information society. This qualification will be of value to candidates entering employment across a wide range of industries and professions or university courses.

Understanding of how to construct and deconstruct media texts will focus on these key concepts:

· Media Forms (including media language, narrative and genre)

· Representation

· Audience

· Institutions

We will also consider how media exist with wider contexts, with inherent values and ideologies. We will examine and create media texts across the three platforms:

· Broadcast (film, TV, radio etc.)

· Print (newspapers, magazines, advertising, film posters etc.)

· E-media (web sites, social media, computer games, apps, etc.)

Entry requirements

A grade B in English Language or Literature is essential. It is also desirable to have been successful in the GCSE Media Studies course to B grade standard. An enthusiasm for the media, film, television and new technology is essential, as is a willingness to commit to practical work outside of lesson time.
