Further Mathematics A Level at St Ivo School
Like the Mathematics course we focus very strongly on Pure Mathematics. It builds on from GCSE and the work done in ‘ordinary’ Maths A Level classes. In both Year 12 and Year 13 there are also lessons on Statistics and Decision Mathematics. Again like the Mathematics course, Further Mathematics consists of two exam papers in Pure Maths taken at the end of the two year programme. Two more examination papers are also sat at the end of the two year course in Further Statistics and Decision Maths.
Further Mathematics is a course designed for able students who want to extend their mathematical knowledge. The course is an extension of the A2 level Mathematics course and allows students to tackle a wider breadth of work and some more demanding topics. The course provides an introduction to several new areas of mathematics, such as complex numbers, and extends the concepts of areas such as calculus and geometry taught in the A level Mathematics course.
Entry to St Ivo Sixth Form is dependent on attitude to learning and behaviour as well as examination performance. This is set out in a separate document called “Sixth Form Entry Requirements” which is available on the school website. Some subjects will also have subject specific requirements.
As with Mathematics, a graphical calculator is an essential requirement.
Students who choose to take Further Mathematics are usually interested in continuing to degree level a subject with substantial mathematical content, such as Mathematics, Economics, Physics, or Engineering. However the course is also interesting to anyone with a real appreciation of mathematics and wishes to extend their mathematical ability.
