German A Level at St Ivo School
In this stimulating course, using up-to-date materials from newspapers, magazines, radio, television and the internet, students study the language and current issues in German speaking countries. Additional lessons with a German Assistant will focus on improving conversational skills and confidence.
On the A level course, students study the following: • Aspects of German speaking society such as the changing state of the family, the digital world and youth culture • Multiculturalism in society such as immigration, integration and racism • Artistic culture such as festivals and traditions, art and architecture and cultural life in Berlin • Political issues in Germany such as the German reunification and its consequences, youth and politics and the European Union • Students will also study a film in depth as well as a piece of literature.
Entry to St Ivo Sixth Form is dependent on attitude to learning and behaviour as well as examination performance. This is set out in a separate document called “Sixth Form Entry Requirements” which is available on the school website. Some subjects will also have subject specific requirements.
Language qualifications at A Level are highly regarded amongst employers in general and in an increasingly international world can give them significant advantage over monolingual competitors in the job market. Successful completion of A level in a language entitles students to apply for: pure language degrees, diplomas, certificates at colleges or universities, joint degrees with language as one element. Alternatively, students with an A level in German can apply for work which requires specific language skills such as in travel and tourism, marketing and sales, hotel and catering, journalism or transport.
