Design and Technology - A Level at The Latymer School

Course description

AQA Design and Technology AS and A Level are offered (Product Design and Fashion and Textiles) providing students with a route through to higher education and careers in a variety of design fields and all aspects of engineering and architecture.

In Year 12 Product Design AS students work a single brief with the context set by the exam board. Students develop new making and materials knowledge through focused practical tasks that builds and develops their skills throughout the year. The project should take around 35 hours and consist of a final product and an electronic supporting portfolio of around 35 A3 sheets. Students design and make a single project that is a choice of three brief these could be any of the following:

  • Design and make a product suitable for a high profile event
  • Design and make a product that addresses the needs of the elderly
  • Design and make a model for a contemporary home

All of these projects cover design movements, anthropometrics, working to scale, designing for a client and the design concept. The course work is 50% of the AS unit There is one two hour exam at the end of AS worth 50% of the overall grade covering:

  • Core and specialist technical principles
  • Designing and making principles

Year 13 A Level Product Design students have a free choice as to the theme of their project work. This project is expected to take 45 hours and is a single substantial design and make project supported by a high quality electronic portfolio of 40 -45 A3 sheets. There are two exams at the end of the A Level and these combine to be 50% of the A Level grade Paper 1 30% 2½ hours long Technical Principals Paper 2 20% 1½ hours long Designing and Making Principals Design and Technology Fashion and Textiles is also run at AS and A2 providing a route into Material Science, Fashion Design, Costume Design, Fashion Buying and Fashion Business.

Students develop new making and materials knowledge through focused practical tasks that builds and develops their skills throughout the year. The project should take around 35 hours and consist of a final product and an electronic supporting portfolio of around 35 A3 sheets. Students design and make a single project that is a choice of three brief these could be any of the following:

  • Design a fashion item based on a design movement or artist
  • Design a fashion item suitable for a high profile event
  • Design a fashion item that considers the impact on the environment
  • There is one two hour exam at the end of AS worth 50% of the overall grade covering:
  • Core and specialist technical principles
  • Designing and making principles

In Year 13 A2 are free to design and produce any item that will allow them to show their creative abilities to their best advantage. This project is expected to take 45 * hours and is a single substantial design and make project supported by a high quality electronic portfolio of 40 -45 A3 sheets. There are two exams at the end of the A Level and these combine to be 50% of the A Level grade Paper 1 30% 2½ hours long Technical Principals Paper 2 20% 1½ hours long Designing and Making Principals
