Physical Education A level at Stokesley School

Course description

It is not a requirement that you should have studied Physical Education at GCSE level in order to take an Advanced Subsidiary or Advanced GCE course in the subject. Several topics covered in the course are developments of work covered at GCSE, but others are new.

What is important is that you should have a lively and enquiring mind, an interest in Physical Education, a willingness to explore new ideas and an ability to communicate your ideas effectively. If you enjoy sporting activities it will broaden your all-round knowledge of Physical Education and Sport. It is essential that you take part in organised / competitive sport on a weekly basis.

At AS, students will look at the opportunities for, and the effects of, leading a healthy and active lifestyle. Students will learn about the physiological effects of exercise, learn to analyse different sporting movements and study the effects of psychology on sporting performance. Students will learn about opportunities for physical activity and potential barriers faced by minority groups.

In the AS practical unit, students get experience of sporting roles, such as performer, official or coach, in their chosen activity, and use theory and knowledge to identify strengths and weaknesses in their own and others’ performance.

There will also be two end of year written exams and a written project of 1750 words to support your practical coursework

Future opportunities

These qualifications will both provide you with a solid foundation in the sport sector enabling you to develop essential skills in order to pursue your education or career in sport, within one of its occupational areas. These areas include careers in exercise and fitness, coaching, sports development and the outdoors. They can lead to a range of higher education courses linked to sport and exercise.
