Biology at Formby High School
Biology at Formby High School is one component of our hugely successful Science provision in Sixth Form. Our science facilities are outstanding and we have a team of dedicated, inspiring and knowledgeable teachers.
Over recent years, students who have studied Biology A Level have been successful in gaining places on the Nuffield Bursary programme.
An A Level in Biology could be the opening to an exciting range of biology - related careers or study in other sciences, including Medicine, Biochemistry and scientific research . The origins of living things and how they work is fundamental to the world we live in and, whether your interest is in the animal world, marine life, humans or plant life, the study of Biology is the core of further knowledge and discovery . A Level Biology is a versatile stepping stone to many fields of work and study.
During Year 12 the course involves the study of four units:
- Biological molecules
- Organisms exchange substances with their environment
- Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms
During Year 13 a further four units are studied:
- Energy transfers in and between organisms
- Organisms respond to changes in their environment
- Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems
- The control of gene expression
Investigation is at the heart of Biology and a rich diet of practical work is essential to develop students’ manipulative skills and understanding of the processes of scientific investigation. Students taking A level Biology will be expected to carry out a set of 12 practical activities which will be assessed by their teachers and required for their practical s kills endorsement.
Students require a B grade in GCSE Biology with at least 75% in Unit 2 and a high B grade in GCSE Mathematics. Alternatively, students must achieve a B grade in GCSE Additional Science with at least 75% in the Biology component and a high B grade in GCSE Mathematics .
The nature of this course makes it ideal preparation for further study in pure or applied natural sciences; for example, medicine, agriculture, veterinary science, sports physiology and food science. It also prepares students well for employment in any appropriate field of life sciences.
