Public Service BTEC Level 2 - SINGLE AWARD at St Ivo School
This vocational course is intended to prepare students for the world of work in public services. To do this the course is designed to: • Equip learners with knowledge, understanding, and skills required when moving towards a career in the uniformed and non-uniformed public services • Give students an insight into the world of employment in the public services • Provide students with the opportunity to improve their key skills such as team building, communication and leadership.
This course is offered to students who have an interest in working for the public services. If you are interested in working for the armed forces, emergency services, security and prison services, customs or youth services, this course could be for you. You will be doing lots of practical work, visiting local public service providers and meeting people who are already doing the jobs that you would like to do. As part of this course you will provide a portfolio of evidence which is internally assessed and externally verified.
1. Award (Single Option) This is equivalent to 1 GCSE.
You will study 4 units including: • The Role and Work of the Public Services • Working Skills and the Public Services • Employment and the Public Services • Health, Fitness and Lifestyle for the Public Services
2. Certificate (Double option) This is equivalent to 2 GCSEs.
In addition to the units studied for the Award, you will study a further 2 units to achieve the Certificate.
Entry is dependent on student performance in the best eight GCSEs. All students to whom offers are made will need to have passed English Language and Mathematics at least grade 4 or better, or if not, then they will need to resit these subjects alongside their Level 2 courses. Typically, students who study Level 2 courses will have achieved a combination of grades 4-2 at GCSE. Offers for Level 2 courses will be made on the basis of predicted GCSE grades.
Students may be required to purchase walking boots and waterproof jackets. There may also be mini-bus fares for visits to local barracks or airbases. Please enquire if this would affect your decision to study this subject.
Students could continue on to a BTEC Students could continue on to a BTEC National Level 3 in Public Services at a further education college, or could stay at St Ivo to study at Level 3 if they gain a MERIT or above in this course. The course is also a good introduction to careers in the emergency services, armed forces and other areas listed above.
