History A Level at St Francis Xavier 6th Form College (SFX College)

Course description

You will read, research independently, question, discuss and argue in small groups in class reacting intelligently and critically. You will need to enjoy forming arguments and carefully select evidence to support them. We will help individuals to develop clear, concise and accurate powers of expression, orally and on paper. Activities will include essays, source work, debate and research. History students go on a number of trips including to Paris, the Tower of London and Hampton Court.

Entry requirements

In addition to our Programme Entry Requirements, applicants must also meet specific Course Entry Requirements:

Grade B in English Language.

Students with a Grade C in English Language and a B in History will be considered subject to availability.

Assessment

A level History is 80% exam and 20% coursework.

AS level History is 100% exam (Papers 1 and 2 of Revolutions and Empire).

Future opportunities

History is a well-respected A level, which many students choose to continue studying to degree level.

History A level is useful for any career – particularly those which involve research, analysing information and developing arguments.

Students with History A level often progress to careers in politics, the Civil Service, banking and management consultancy, journalism, teaching, law, public relations and advertising.
