English Language A Level at Ashfield School

Course content

Language and the individual - 50% weighting.

 Students will study a range of texts about various subjects from various writers and speakers. These texts should be for various audiences, purposes and in a variety of genres and modes (written, spoken and electronic). Students will consider how language helps shape our identities.

Language varieties - 50% weighting.

Students will be given the opportunity to look at a range of texts and consider how different factors influence the ways in which we communicate. Students will also build up a technical vocabulary to help with your analysis and you’ll also become familiar with a range of language theorists.

Language, the individual and society – 40% weighting

Language diversity and change – 40% weighting

Language in action – 20% weighting

Entry requirements

B grade in English Language at GCSE, as well as four other A*-C grades at GCSE.

Future opportunities

An A level qualification in English Language can lead to further study at university and into a wide range of careers including Speech Therapy, Journalism, Media, Publishing, Teaching, Advertising, Marketing, Law and Business. Most sectors value an A level in this qualification.
