Course description

Why study BTEC Health & Social Care?

This qualification provides an introduction to those students who are interested in a career within the health and social care sector. It supports progression to higher education or training, employment or an apprenticeship.

 The course provides excellent opportunities to develop the following employability skills.

•           cognitive and problem-solving skills: use critical thinking, approach non-routine problems applying expert and creative solutions, use systems and technology

•           intrapersonal skills: communicating, working collaboratively, negotiating and influencing, self-presentation

•          interpersonal skills: self-management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring and development.


Course content

What will I study?

Students will be assessed in 13 specialised units, over 2 years.  These units will include Human Lifespan Development, Working in Health and Social Care, Anatomy and Physiology, and Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care.

Units will be assessed by a combination of internally assessed individual projects, and externally assessed controlled assessment tasks with a written examination. 

The extended diploma course carries a UCAS point’s equivalent to 3 A-levels and is accepted by the majority of universities.


BTEC Health & Social Care Extras

You will be required to undertake a minimum of 100 hours’ work experience in a wide variety of Health, Social Care and Early Years settings. There are coursework assignments and activities which need to be completed in a care setting. These form part of your portfolio. We will assist you with placements and organising voluntary work.

At least a 4 in English and Maths


* Please note that Level 2 vocational courses are the equivalent of 1 GCSE and only 2 will be counted towards the entry requirements
