Chemistry A Level at Beaufort Co-operative Academy

Course description

AS Level and Year 1 of A Level Students will be studying the three main chemistry threads, organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. Developing mathematical methods for chemists, deepening understanding of trends in the periodic table as well as concepts relating to how reactions occur. Some key topics are bonding, structure, kinetics, basic spectroscopy and energetics. All of this theory is supported by practical skills. Year 2 of A Level Students have the opportunity to learn about sub branches of the three main chemistry threads. Exploring chemistry of polymers, proteins, further energetics, electrochemistry, spectroscopy, acids and bases and transition metals. All of this theory is supported by practical skills, the practical aspect of the course is particularly important for students to gain an A - level in chemistry.

Assessment

There is no coursework component to the AS or A Level Chemistry course, so the assessment is solely down to the completion of 2 exams for AS level or 3 exams for A Level. These are a mixture of long, short and multiple choice style questions, on subject content and also practical skills and data analysis. Students will complete a series of practical activities, which will be monitored and assessed. Successful completion will lead to the student being awarded a practical endorsement, as well as their overall grade. This signifies to universities and to employers that the student has demonstrated knowledge and ability in common chemistry practical procedures, and is ready for future study and/ or employment.
