Biology at Downham Market Academy
The specification is divided into topics, each covering different key concepts of biology. The teaching of practical skills is integrated w ith the theoretical topics and will be assessed through the examinations. At both AS and A Level, there is no longer a coursework element that contributes to the overall grade. The final grade is determined solely by student performance in the terminal ex aminations.
The entry requirement for this course is a GCSE ‘B’ grade on the Science Higher Paper.
Two written papers covering modules 1 – 4. Both papers are 1 hour 30 minutes long and carry equal weighting (50%).
Three written papers covering modules 1 – 6.
- Paper 1 covers modules 1, 2, 3 and 5; it 2 hours 15 minutes long; 37% weighting.
- Paper 2 covers modules 1, 2, 4 and 6; it 2 hours 15 minutes long; 37% weighting.
- Paper 3 covers modules 1 – 6; it has a weighting of 26%.
The course will complement a wide range of other subject choices at GCE level, such as Sports Science, Psychology, Geography and Chemistry. It will provide an excellent foundation for further study of Biology, Biomedical Science or other Biological Science courses in higher education as well as Medicine, Veterinary Science and Nursing.
For students not intending to pursue a study of Biological Sciences to a higher level the course provides a valuable educational experience and the chance to develop skills relevant to areas beyond Biology.
Please note that the new AS Level qualification will no longer count towards the final grade of the A Level . AS and A Level Biology are now separate qualifications with examinations taken at the end of the period of study , that is one year and two years respectively. Biology is a well - equipped department which is able to offer excellent technical, academic and pastoral support.
