Government and Politics at Downham Market Academy

Course description

The course aims to give students a knowledge of both British and American government and politics, as well as an understanding of the main political ideologies. It encourages students to develop their capacity for critical thinking and their ability to analyse issues.

Course content

AS/A2: 8 hours over a 2 week cycle. AQA Specification.

Politics is a very popular subject in the College, with students not only being able to learn about the world around them and how decisions affecting them are made, but also having the chance to see and hear many of the people themselves by visiting the Houses of Parliament and attending lectures given by well known politicians.

Results are excellent, with many securing top grades and an encouraging number going on to study the subject at University.

Entry requirements

No previous knowledge of government and politics is required. However, a good command of English is useful, in particular the ability to express oneself well on paper and to argue a point of vi ew, using evidence to support that view.

An interest in current affairs both in the UK and the USA is vital.

Assessment

The A Level consists of three papers, each 2 hours long and contributing to 1/3 of the overall mark.

  • Paper 1 is on the Government and Politics of the UK
  • Paper 2 the Government and Politics of the USA
  • Paper 3 Political ideas

All three papers follow the same format with 3 short answer questions and 2 essay questions with one based on source material.

Students with a good command of English and an interest in the world around them will be wel l equipped to cope with the course.

Future opportunities

Government and Politics is a well - established subject, recognised by both universities and employers. It combines particularly well with subjects such as English, History, Sociology and Business Studies and is used to follow careers in Law, Journalism, Civil Service and Management as well as many others.
