Sociology at Downham Market Academy

Course description

We live in interesting times and the study of Sociology is highly relevant to students’ developing an understanding of the impact of globalisation, for example, on all our lives. It helps students to develop a wider understanding of how and why societies worked in the recent past and how recent changes of the technological age are impacting on people’s ideas, social behaviour and cultures.

Societies are shaped: a) by the time and place in which they exist, but also by, b) the individuals who interact with each other producing and shaping their social reality. These are the core elements of sociological study and as a social science a key focus is on sociological research methods and the development of critical thinking skills.

Course content

This A Level is a two year course, with the first year being broadly similar to the old AS. The AQA syllabus is followed at Downham Market Academy Sixth Form. Students will study two units in the first year; Families and Households and Education with Research Methods, and two further Units in the second year; Beliefs in Society and Crim e and Deviance with Sociological Theory and Methodology.

Sociology is an academic subject with formal assessment being largely essay based. It is essential for students to have reached a competent level in English. It would also be helpful to have studied History and/or RE at GCSE. Sociology combines well with other A Level subjects in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, particularly Psychology, Media, Philosophy and Religion, History and Politics.

Sociology is accepted for admission to a wide range of university degree courses including: Social Sciences, the Arts, Humanities, Criminology and Business Studies, at a range of Institutions, including Cambridge and the London School of Economics. It is also accepted for training courses in Health and Social Care, Human Resources, Teaching, Journalism, the Police Force and Legal Profession. Many Sociology graduates go on to be employed in these professions.
