Geology A Level at Corfe Hills School

Course description

Unit 4: (F794) Environmental Geology.  In this module you will learn about the Earth’s natural resources. Ranging from Oil, Coal and Natural Gas to Britain’s water supply. We also look at metallic mining and how Geology is used in Engineering.

Unit 5: (F795) Evolution of Life, Earth & Climate.  This module provides you with insight about the evolution of life beginning in the Cambrian Period over 500 million years ago. We follow the development of life until the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.  You will also look at how the Earth’s climate has changed throughout time.

Unit 5: (F796) Practical Skills. This module provides you with practical and investigative skills within contexts encountered during A2 Geology.

Course content

With a more focussed view of the economics of Geology in year two, this course is very much a springboard into a future career in this area.  It will provide insight and develop key skills which will underpin more focused study at higher education.

Assessment

There are three external assessments:

Unit 4: Environmental Geology. This consists of a 60 minute written examination will test your understanding of this module and will be 30 % of the marks for the A2.

Unit 5: Evolution of Life, Earth & Climate.  A 1 hour 45 minute written examination will test your understanding of this module and will be 50% of the marks for A2.

Unit 6: Practical Skills.  These are assessed under exam conditions within the classroom. This module will be 20% of the marks for A2.

Internal Assessment: At the end of each topic of work students will be assessed in line with the exam board criteria and will also sit a mock exam prior to any external examinations.
