Media A Level at Corfe Hills School
Unit 3: (MEST3) 50% Studying the Impact of New and Digital Media on Institutions. Examples of this could be looking at the way that Coca Cola has had to market itself differently after the digital revolution such as with viral marketing, or looking at the way Disney has changed since the birth of the internet. Big questions are raised such as ‘has the internet made us more democratic’ and ‘should the internet be uncensored’. We also do a module where we study media representations of a particular group or place such as ‘Representation of Homosexuality’ in the media. We also look at the way that disability is represented in the media. You will have to undertake your own case study into the way a particular group are represented in the media.
Unit 4: (MEST4) 50% Critical Investigation and Linked Production. Students will write their own essay question and complete a 2000 word essay on this topic area. Students are then to create a linked production to their individual investigation area. This means that you are able to study an area personal to you. Students have written about a range of films, but also fashion photography, adverts and video games. It is a real opportunity for you to pursue your passion for a particular media area.
During Unit 4 you will have the opportunity to write your own Critical Investigation Question and create your own linked production piece. An example might be ‘To what extent does the recent spate of Vampire films indicate societies growing acceptance of the monster’. This could lead to you creating a trailer for a new vampire film. Students enjoy this section of the course as they are given the choice to study exactly what they want to study. The work is presented in the annual Oscars ceremony and has, in the past, led students onto great successes.
You will complete your coursework by February and sit the exam in June.
