Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design (UAL) at Sussex Coast College Hastings

Course description

Over the course of the year you will be able express your creativity and passion for Art, Design and Media to further develop you technical skills in drawing, painting, ceramics, glass work, digital art, and photography. Our experienced and professional tutors will guide you with your Art and Design ideas and concepts, and help you to build your portfolio. English and Maths will also be a mandatory part of this course.

Course content

Topics throughout the year will include:

  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Printmaking
  • Ceramics
  • Photography
  • 2D Visual Arts
  • Digital Art
  • Glass Work

By the end of the course you will have developed a range of skills, and started to build a strong portfolio to help you with applications to higher levels of study in Art and Design.

Entry requirements

To apply for this course you will need 4 GCSEs A*- D or Grade 3 and above, or relevant Level 1 qualification & a portfolio of your art work.


Your assessments will be 100% coursework based, which may include working on 'live projects'. Last year, students had the opportunity to create artwork and ceramics for the Hastings Pier Charity. Your final project in the third term will be externally assessed by the UAL Exam Board.

Financial information

You may be required to purchase your own materials such as sketchbooks, pens, paints, brushes, and memory sticks. As a SCCH student you will be able to get 10% off in our Plaza Art Shop. You may also have the opportunity to attend a number of trips and visits which may incur additional costs.

Future opportunities

Once you have completed this course you will have achieved the equivalent of 4 pass grades at GCSE and will enable you to progress to onto a Level 3 Art and Design or Creative Media course.

There are a number of career opportunities available to you in the art and design industry such as: a graphic designer, web designer, photographer, illustrator, jewellery designer, animator, film director, set designer or fine artist.

    • Located next to Hasting town centre, Station Plaza is a large, light-filled building surrounded by 22,000 square meters of study space and social zones. Classrooms are equipped with the most up-to-date resources and interactive whiteboards. It houses multiple IT suites, a gym, Coast coffee, Subway, Coast Restaurant, a training kitchen, a professional salon, an art shop, diner and a large Learning Resource Centre. 

      Students have 24/7 access to lessons and learning resources from home via WIKI, podcasts and teacher/student blogs. Students can hire laptops from the LRCs and both sites are WIFI activated.
