Hairdressing Level 2 at Ashfield School

Course description

This qualification is ideal for anyone wishing to commence a career in hairdressing. They are highly practical and provide you with the skills and underpinning knowledge required to practice as a hairdresser. NVQ’s are work based qualifications designed to reflect the different skills required by hairdressers and barbers when dealing with different types of hair, client individual needs, fashion and trends.

Ashfield is an excellent choice to study the level 2 qualification, class sizes are small, never more than 14, and you get an individual personalised education in hairdressing. Staffs are accredited by the main awarding bodies for hairdressing and have years ‘of experience in the field of hairdressing and teaching. Facilities at the Ashfield skills centre are amongst the best in the area.

Entry requirements

5 or more GCSEs at D/E and interview.


To achieve the Level 2 qualification, you will have to pass a total of nine units, which include: Health & Safety, Giving clients a positive impression of your organisation, Advise and consult with clients, Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp, Change hair colour, Style & finish hair, Set & dress hair, Cut hair using basic techniques, Plait and twist hair.

Learners will produce evidence by:

  • Being observed by your assessor
  • Being asked questions by your assessor
  • Completing assignments
  • Keeping documents, e.g. work logs or client records
  • Doing written or online tests

You will keep all this evidence in a portfolio. You will regularly be given feedback by your assessor and you will receive further training if you need it. If your assessor tells you that you are competent after an assessment, it will be recorded on the forms in your logbook.

Future opportunities

You can go on to study Level 3 Hairdressing or work in a salon as a junior stylist.
