Horse Care- Level 1 Certificate at Plumpton College

Course description

This course is an ideal starting point for those students with some practical experience of working with horses. The course will enable students to progress onto a level 2 course.

Through work experience on the college yard, your understanding of horse care and welfare will be broadened and you will learn how to correctly handle and look after a variety of horses.

Course content

You can look forward to a varied programme of modules that also includes a work placement. You'll also continue your english and maths up to GCSE level.

Modules include:

  • Safe and effective working procedures in land bansed industry
  • Assist with the preperatation of animal accomodation
  • Assist with the handeling of restraint of horses
  • Functional skills/GCSE

Entry requirements

Either:

  • You'll need to have achieved 1 or more GCSE grades 2-1 or another related entry level 3 qualification
  • Completion of the Rural Pathways programme and a strong interest in animal care
  • Successful completion of a level 1 course in another area
  • Mature students without the above will be considered

Facility Fee:

  • Cost for day students- £120 per year
  • Cost for residential students- £200 per year

Successful students can further enhance their skills by enrolling onto a work-based qualification, apprenticeship or the level 2 diploma.

We’ve got two large indoor schools on-site, complete with galleries, for you to enjoy during your course.

  • Lots of space for you to enjoy outdoors at our extensive estate

You’ll be able to use our 30m x 60m outdoor menege during your course in addition to stabling for 50 horses.

  • A variety of horses for you to experience and enjoy

We make sure that you get to work with and ride a variety of different horses throughout your time at Plumpton including Shire horses.

  • The latest equine facilities are available on-site

Keep up with the latest technologies introduced in the industry. You’ll get to experience equipment such as a cross-country course, treadmill and weigh bridge.

    • The main Plumpton College site is located at the foot of the picturesque South Downs National Park. Six miles from Lewes, the County Town of East Sussex.

      The College specialises in providing a wide range of land-based courses in partnership with schools, for those in further education and for those in higher education. The College degree courses are validated by the University of Brighton.
