Mathematics - A Level at Northallerton College
The course builds on the work at GCSE level in algebra, trigonometry, geometry and statistics but also new areas of mechanics and decision. For both AS and A2, there are two pure mathematics units and one applied unit There is no coursework assessment in any of the units.
Students need to have achieved a minimum of grade 6 in maths at GCSE.
Teachers use a variety of teaching and learning approaches including teacher exposition, whole class discussions and group work Regular assessments inform both teachers and students about progress. Worksheets, worked solutions and exam papers used in lessons are available to students on the intranet. Lesson presentations are also available which enable students to revise orto catch up on work missed. Staff also provide support outside of normal lesson times.
Advanced level mathematics is a very good general qualification for a wide range of higher education courses and careers. Many universities prefer candidates to have A level maths even on courses that have only a minimal mathematical content.
