Latin A Level at Saffron Walden County High School

Course description

Studying Latin presents the unique opportunity to expand your knowledge of the
language, literature and culture of the fascinating ancient world. We read a wide
range of Latin texts, including extracts from Cicero, Virgil, Livy, Tacitus and Ovid.
This course also allows students to develop important transferable skills, such as
keen analysis, problem solving and attention to detail.

Course content

Year 13
Translation (Livy and Ovid) and prose composition
Tacitus,  Annals I, 3–7, 11–14, 46–49 in Latin and chapters 31–45 in English
Virgil, Aeneid Book X, 215-250, 260-307, 362- 399, 426-542 in Latin
and the rest of Book X in English

Entry requirements

GCSE 6 in Latin

Assessment

A-Level
Unseen Translation (one prose and one verse text):
1 hour 45 minutes – 33% of A-Level
Prose Composition or Comprehension:
1 hour 15 minutes – 17% of total A-Level
Prose Literature: 2 hours – 25% of A-Level
Verse Literature: 2 hours – 25% of A-Level
