Mathematics: Quantitative Reasoning AS Level at Saffron Walden County High School
Quantitative Reasoning is an exciting new Mathematics qualification.
Mathematics can be used to help people make decisions, form business plans and
understand in detail the information they are presented with on a daily basis.
Quantitative Reasoning aims to help students become more mathematically
aware, in order to be more employable and less susceptible to the mathematical
pitfalls of life. This course is ideal if you enjoy maths but are not taking the A-Level,
and as a course to support your other A-Level studies, such as Economics.
The course is split into two sections, Introduction to Quantitative Methods and Critical Maths. The first of these sections teaches the mathematical tools required to deal with the scenarios encountered in Critical Maths. These include percentages, probability and graphs. The Critical Maths section takes these skills and applies them in context. The topics here include dealing with risk (eg. when is medical screening appropriate?), scams (eg. is it too good to be true?) and the use and abuse of percentages (eg. do speed cameras really save lives?).
GCSE 5 in Maths
The course is assessed in two, 2-hour written examinations at the end of Year 13.
