Childcare Introduction to Early Years Education & Care Level 2 Cache Certificate at Wigan & Leigh College

Course description

The aim of this qualification is to prepare learners to work with children between birth and five years with knowledge of children up to seven years or to progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Early Years Education and Care (EYE). Learners must be a minimum of 16 years of age.

Course content

Learners will undertake a programme of study comprising 4 themes - introducing the role of the early years practitioner, legislation, framework and professional practice, play, development and learning for school and professional development. Learners will also complete Maths and English to an appropriate level. There is a large element of work experience included in this study programme.

Entry requirements


A minimum of 5 A*-D/ 9-3 GCSE subjects or equivalent including maths or English


Through assessment in the work place, and a range of assessment methods in college to include assignments and reflective practice and external exams in Maths and English where appropriate

Future opportunities

Employment as Nursery Assistant within the Early Years Sector, or progression to a Level 3 course subject to completion of the course and a successful interview.

Your skills in problem solving, team working and self-discipline will be developed as a result of studying towards this qualification. You will receive support from a competent, approachable team of staff who have been professionals in the Early Years sector. You will require satisfactory DBS clearance.

    • Our Parson's Walk Centre houses a wide range of vocational courses and provides a unique and exciting atmosphere.

      The Centre features the award winning Wheel restaurant, together with other outstanding facilities that provide hands on work experience including the Image Centre, Florist Shop and Travel Shop.

      In addition, our classrooms offer a comfortable and professional working environment which is exemplified by our £20,000 state-of-the-art Apple Mac suite.

      This Centre also houses the College's largest Learning Resource Centre to provide help and support to all students in the use of the library and IT facilities. Our dedicated team of staff are on hand to provide assistance with electronic books and databases, information skills and one-to-one sessions. Laptops, iPads and Samsung tablets are just a selection of the range of facilities available.

      This Centre is completed with our Employment Services team who are here to offer you a personal information, advice and guidance session to identify areas of development and agree goals to set you on your path to gaining employment.
