Plumbing/Heating Level 3 Apprenticeship at Wigan & Leigh College

Course description

Candidates must be able to provide a significant amount of work-based evidence to be successful. Generally studied as part of an apprenticeship, NVQ Level 2 is recognised by the Plumbing Industry as the minimum qualification for skilled operatives.

Course content

Modules include: Safety in Plumbing, Key Plumbing Principles, Common Plumbing Processes, Cold Water Systems, Domestic Hot Water Systems, Sanitation, Central Heating, Electrical Supply and Earth, Sheet Lead Work, Environmental Awareness and Effective Working Relationships.

Entry requirements

You must be employed in the plumbing industry, have GCSE grades A-C in Mathematics and English (or pass a pre-test) and have a successful interview.

Assessment

By continuous external and internal assessment, and completion of a portfolio containing work/college based evidence.

Further information

As part of your course you may study towards Key Skills at the appropriate level. Personal Protective Equipment equipment is required for workshop environment.

    • The College's Pagefield Centre is a purpose built facility to educate students, apprentices and tradespeople of the future.

      This state-of-the-art facility offers a range of Courses in Construction Crafts and Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering.

      Large workshops and training environments, together with the latest machinery, software and equipment allow our students to gain the skills and knowledge that employers are looking for.

      The Centre boasts an excellent reputation amongst a range of employers across the Wigan Borough which is exemplified by our students quickly progressing into the professional industry.

      Pagefield Centre is currently receiving a £1.4m development in top of the range facilities to add to its already impressive learning environment.

      The turning and milling workshops will soon have new and upgraded equipment, which will include the latest technology in fabrication and welding.

      There will also be a plasma cutting bed and a new thermodynamic and fluid mechanic laboratory.

      To complement this state of the art equipment, students will have access to the latest finite element analysis software, CAD / CAM, hydraulics and pneumatics software, enabling them to experience learning in a high-spec environment.
