English Literature AS/A level at Hatch End High School

Course description

You will study the following:

Literary Genres: Aspects of Tragedy

You will study four texts: one Shakespeare play Othello, one further drama text Death of a Salesman, one poetry text Thomas Hardy and one prose text Tess of the D’Ubervilles.

Texts and genres: Elements of political and social protest writing

You will study three texts: one post– 2000 prose text; one poetry and one further text pre—1900.

Non-exam assessment: Theory and independence

You will study two texts: one poetry and one prose text, informed by study of the Critical anthology.

Course content

How will I be taught?

You will be taught by a team of two teachers and much of the work in class will be done in discussion groups. You will develop your knowledge, learning different ways of reading and connecting texts within a literary genre. You will gain a solid understanding of how texts can be connected and how they can be interpreted in multiple ways in order for you to arrive at your interpretations.

Entry requirements

6 GCSE grades A*-C/9-5 to include Maths & English.

Assessment

AS Level

Both units of the AS course are externally assessed, focussing on A01, A02, A03, A04 and A05. Paper 1 and Paper 2 both equally weighed at 50%.

A Level

Paper 1 40%

Paper 2 40%

Non-exam assessment 20%

Future opportunities

This course provides a good foundation for degree courses in English, the arts, humanities and media and leads to careers in writing, journalism, the media, teaching and administration.
