German AS/A level at Hatch End High School

Course description

During this course you will read and listen to authentic foreign language materials and will study aspects of the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of a country where the language is spoken. You will learn to be an effective communicator, to speak and write the language for different purposes, to use the language to express facts and ideas and to use the language to present explanations, opinions and information. At AS these skills will be practised using material based on the following topic areas: Aspects of German-speaking Society; and Artistic culture in the German-speaking world. At A Level the following themes are added on: Multiculturalism in German-speaking society; and Aspects of political life in the German-speaking world. At AS level and at A level you will also have the opportunity to study German literature and film.

Course content

How will I be taught?

You will be taught using all 4 skills of speaking, listening, writing and reading. You will have opportunities to express views, debate and to give presentations.

Entry requirements

6 GCSE grades A*-C/9-5 to include Maths & English Language (C+/5+). A B+/6+ grade in GCSE German is desirable.

Assessment

At AS level you sit 2 formal papers. One for listening, reading and translation from German into English; and the second paper for translation from English into German and a written response to either a book or film that has been studied. There is also an oral examination.

At A level there are also 2 formal papers. Paper 1 is listening, reading and translation in to English. Paper 2 comprises of 2 written essays based on either 2 books that have been studied or one book and one film. There is also an oral examination at A Level.
