Information Technology BTEC National Extended Diploma at Hatch End High School

Course description

This course is for anyone who wants to use technology to collaborate and create exciting projects. There is potential for the qualification to prepare learners for employment in the appropriate vocational sector and is equivalent to either 1 or 3 GCE A Level/s.

Course content

The extended certificate, equivalent in size to one A Level, includes 4 units of which 3 are mandatory and 2 are external.

The extended diploma equivalent in size to three A Levels, includes 13 units of which 7 are mandatory and 4 are external.

Mandatory Units include:

  •  Information Technology Systems
  •  Creating Systems to Manage Information
  •  Using Social Media in Business

Optional Unit examples are:

  •  Data Modelling
  •  Website Development
  •  Mobile Apps Development
  •  Computer Games Development
  •  IT Project Management
  •  Big Data and Business Analytics

How will I be taught?

Theory supported by a large element of controlled assessment, project work and external exams. Pupils will be expected to work independently .

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades A*-C/9-4 to include Maths & English Language at grade 4+.


External examinable units and internal assessment in the form of coursework based on PASS, MERIT and DISTINCTION criteria. There will be 6 units for students

Future opportunities

A Merit or above from the course could take you on to a business related degree course in Higher Education, University, apprenticeships or full-time employment. As the modules cover a diverse range of skills this course can lead to career opportunities within a wide variety of information communication technology fields including networking, programing and IT support.
