Performing Arts BTEC National Extended Certificate at Hatch End High School

Course description

If you're interested in live theatre, then a qualification in Performing Arts will be the perfect way for you to learn all about how performance works. From acting to tap dance, musical theatre to Brecht, a whole range of topics are covered. This subject is equivalent to 1 A Level, and takes up 1 Option block.

Course content

As a student on this two year course you will develop theatrical skills and knowledge in both practice and theory. You will have plenty of opportunities to apply your understanding to college productions, whether it's the school production or part of the BTEC showcases that happen termly. You will become part of a Production Company and will learn about all aspects of performance, including acting, dance, musical performance, as well as opportunities to look at backstage management, technical support, set design & construction, costumes & props. You will take on the responsibility of planning and running performances and will develop skills which will prepare you for a degree course.

How will I be taught?

Practical and theory lessons will be taught by specialist staff in a range of rooms, including the theatre, dance studio and IT rooms.

Entry requirements

  • BTEC Level 2 Performing Arts—Merit or better
  • 5 GCSE grades A*-C/9-4 to include Maths & English Language at Grade 4+
  • A successful audition.


You will be assessed for your theory work and practical application. Each unit will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. You accumulate points to attain your final grade at the end of year 2. Most units will be assessed internally as they are completed and will be sent off for moderation in the June of each year. However, ,there is now a percentage of the course set by and assessed by the exam board.

Future opportunities

Higher education courses in related subjects, degree courses in any of the performing arts, e.g: BA Hons. Theatre Practice, Acting, Applied Theatre and Education, Business Studies. It also leads into careers in the performance industry and teaches skills in business, management and technical support that can be applied in a variety of jobs.
