Childrens Play, Learning & Development (Early Years Assistant) BTEC Technical (Level 2) at The Abbey School

Course description

This qualification is for learners who want to start a career in early years’ education and care. It is designed for post-16 learners and can be taken as part of a wider study programme.

Course content

This qualification has 100% mandatory content and 25% external assessment.

Unit 1 Policy and Practice for Working in Early Years Settings (external)

Unit 2 Child Development from Birth to Five Years (external)

Unit 3 Developing Professional Practice Skills for Work in Early Years Settings (internal)

Unit 4 Supporting Children’s Physical Care Needs in Early Years Settings (internal)

Unit 5 Supporting Children’s Learning Through Play (internal)

Unit 6 Supporting Children’s Communication, Literacy and Language Development (internal)

Unit 7 Reflecting on Knowledge, Skills and Behaviour for Working in Early Years Settings (internal)

The course requires a minimum of 280 hours work placement.

5 9-1 GCSEs

Assessment

Internal Assessment takes the form of five coursework units

External Assessment consists of two exams.

Future opportunities

Achieving this qualification will give learners an advantage when applying for a job in the early years’ sector.  It is an ideal qualification if you are intending to progress directly to employment in the early years’ sector, or to an early years’ apprenticeship.

When studied as part of a full study programme, typically alongside maths or English, this qualification also gives learners a sound basis to progress further in the early years sector to a Level 3 qualification such as a Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Children’s Play, Learning and Development (Early Years Educator), a Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Children’s Play, Learning and Development (Early Years Educator), an Advanced Apprenticeship in Children and Young People’s Workforce (Early Years Educator).
