Foundation Art & Design Level 3 / 4 at Warrington & Vale Royal College
This is a creative, varied and highly practical one year programme and is aimed at those who want a career in art, art teaching, theatre set design, illustration, architecture, product design, interior design, fashion or textile design, graphic design, fine art or sculpture. The course is designed for students who have completed either A-Level art & design or a L3 vocational arts based qualification and who wish to progress onto specialist visual arts study at a higher level. It offers students the opportunity to identify their particular specialism and creative direction, build strong portfolios of work and develop personal, creative, practical and intellectual abilities.
The course begins with an introduction to the main art and design disciplines: painting and drawing, textiles/fashion, ceramics/3D and visual communication. After this initial diagnostic experience the course becomes more student centred and offers the opportunity to begin specialist study in order to develop a relevant portfolio for successful UCAS specialist application. The history of art and contemporary theory and practise are studied alongside the practical elements of the course in order to inform and support the work.
You will need to have successfully completed a full and relevant L3 qualification such as the Extended Diploma in Art & Design or 3 A-Levels at grade C or above. You will also need to have achieved a grade 4 or above in both GCSE English and Maths.
You will be continuously assessed based on the projects you complete throughout the year. You will receive both verbal and written tutor feedback and will take part in peer assessments. Assessment is through set assignments and project coursework, culminating in a specialist final major project. All students will take part in an end of year show where they will have the opportunity to showcase their work.
The college provides some specialist art equipment and materials but students are expected to purchase their own sketchbooks, folders and basic art kits. These can be bought from the college art shop.
Students who complete the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design have a number of progression pathways including employment and higher education. Students who achieve on the Foundation Diploma can apply to study on an arts based HNC at Warrington & Vale Royal College or apply to an arts based degree programme at a national university.
