Mathematics A Level at Cedars Upper School
A variety of topics are studied building on the work covered at GCSE. These topic areas consist of Pure Mathematics (algebra, trigonometry etc), Mechanics (statics and dynamics) and Statistics (probability and data handling).
Two thirds of the course will be Pure maths, one-sixth will be mechanics and one-sixth will be Statistics.
To develop the concepts learnt in maths for GCSE. You will learn new material and the over-arching themes must then be applied along with associated mathematical thinking and understanding. In essence, you will learn how to apply mathematics to new situations.
Homework is set after every lesson to consolidate the work covered in school; approximately one hour of homework is set after every lesson. It is imperative that students keep up to date with all homework set.
Students must have studied the subject and achieved a grade 6 or above at GCSE.
In order to keep mathematics fresh in the mind over the long summer break, it is recommended that students purchase and complete the “Head Start” book available during induction week. (£4.00). The Induction homework is also a compulsory pre-requisite for the course
For A level mathematics, exams will be three papers (each one is 2 hours) of Pure maths and then pure maths with each of the applied topics
Revision books (as available) for specific modules £5.00 per module
Optional conferences and courses as available.
Students will need to purchase the Maths A level text book for year 1 (current price is £20) and a calculator which computes statistical distributions and spreadsheets (current price is £21). A text book for year 2 will also need to be purchased.
Maths A level will support many different degree level courses and is highly thought of as an A level by employers and universities.
