The course is intended to involve students in a practical, creative and intellectual way.
The areas of study cover a wide range of musical styles, from large-scale orchestral
music to Jazz and 20th Century popular music. Students should be able to perform
music at Grade 5 difficulty when they begin the course, and be conversant with the
theory of music at that standard.

Course content

Students will gain an experience of a wide range of musical skills, including performing,
composing and analysing as well as developing an understanding of the historical and
contextual uses of music. Study includes:
 Music for Media (Thomas Newman, Michael Giacchino, Hans Zimmer)
 Marriage of Figaro (Mozart)
 Western Classical music

Future opportunities

Obviously the routes forward can be a Music based degree however it is important to
note that Music is thought of very highly at universities as one of the traditional
subjects. We have had students go on to be performers in orchestras and enter
conservatoires.

Further information

We expect Music students in the Sixth Form to take a leading role in the musical life of
the school by weekly attendance at lunchtime and ensembles.
