English Language and Literature at Hall Park Academy

Course description

If you have an interest in the written and spoken word then this could be the course for you.

Course content

You will be developing your research, analytical and essay writing skills through detailed examination of literary works ranging across the centuries, from Shakespeare to the twentieth century.  The combined course offers the opportunity to examine patterns of speech and original writing.

At AS level, coursework comprises of two coursework assignments. One piece is a creative piece of writing where you need to experiment with a range of writing techniques. The second coursework response is an analytical essay which compares how two texts have been written and how language changes over time.

Entry requirements

You will need at least a grade B at GCSE in both English language and English literature.  For further information talk to your teacher or attend the Post-16 Open Evening.


You need good attendance and punctuality throughout the course to pass each module and improve your skills.  By the end of Year 12 two modules will be completed counting for 50% of the final A Level mark; Year 13 includes a further two modules.

Coursework is an important assessment element.

Future opportunities

The course will give you a well recognised qualification. You could go on to higher education to study English or use it to pursue careers in areas such as journalism, law or teaching.

Summer tasks


  1. Buy a writer’s notebook and start to record things in it.
  2. Read at least 1 fiction book and write a review of it.
  3. Write an explanation of which writers interest you and why you like their work.
  4. Write a non-fiction piece. This can be: an article, a review of a restaurant, film or day out (Max. 1000 words).
  5. Write a short story (Max. 1000 words).
  6. Write a poem.

This is creative writing so use interesting ideas, language to excite the reader, sentences which are varied and a range of punctuation! I want to be interested by your writing.

These must be completed and handed in on the first Creative Writing lesson that you have when you begin year 12.
