Mathematical Studies AQA Level 3 at Thomas Mills High School

Course description

Core Maths is a level 3 qualification designed for students who wants to keep up their valuable mathematics skills but are not planning to take AS or A level pure mathematics. It helps to develop students’ mathematical skills and thinking and supports courses such as A-level Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, Business Studies, Economics and Computer Science as well as technical and vocational qualifications.

Course content

Paper 1: Analysis of data, Maths for personal finance and Estimation.
Paper 2A: Critical analysis of given data and models (including spreadsheets and tabular), The normal distribution, Probabilities and estimation, Correlation and regression.
Paper 2B: Critical analysis of given data and models (including spreadsheets andtabular), Critical path and risk analysis, Expectation and Cost benefit analysis.
Paper 2C:
Critical analysis of given data and models (including spreadsheets and tabular), Graphical methods, Rates of change, Exponential functions.
The qualification is assessed by final examination consisting of two papers: the compulsory paper 1 and any one of paper 2A, 2B or 2C.

At the end of the course, students will come out with a Level 3 qualification – with equivalent UCAS points to an AS level.

Entry requirements

The Core Maths qualification is for students who have passed GCSE Mathematics at grade 4 or above but have decided not to study A Level mathematics.
