Digital Media & Computer Technology Level 1 at Warrington & Vale Royal College

Course description

This introductory course is aimed at students who want to develop skills within a variety of digital disciplines. This course is ideal for those who are unsure of the area that they want to specialise in as it offers you the opportunity to explore a wide range of digital subjects before progressing onto a more specialist level 2 qualification.

Course content

Subjects studied will include website design, animation, storyboarding, digital communication technologies, IT presentation techniques and business skills. You will develop skills in teamwork, being organised, researching a topic and developing a personal progression plan. You will explore using software such as the Adobe Creative Suite, Dreamweaver, Excel, Word and Final Cut. You will study in specialist IT & Media suites and learn from tutors who are highly skilled within their particular fields.

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of four GCSEs at grade 2 or above. If you have not already achieved a grade 4 in your GCSE English and maths, you will be required to work towards either a Functional Skills qualification or a GCSE in both English and maths as part of your study programme.


You will be continuously assessed based on the projects you complete throughout the year. You will receive both verbal and written tutor feedback and will take part in peer assessments. Assessment is through coursework.

Financial information

The college provides some specialist equipment and materials but students are expected to purchase their own notepads, folders and pens.

Future opportunities

Students who complete the L1 in Digital Media and Computer Technology can progress onto the L2 in Digital Media & IT.

Will I complete work placements?

Students will have the opportunity to take part in work experience placements and will be supported in finding a suitable placement by the college work experience team and tutors.

Are trips and residentials organised during the course?

Students on the course will have the opportunity to take part in trips both locally and nationally to appropriate IT or media companies, events or conventions.

Are there any links with industry?

Students will have the opportunity to take part in guest lecture workshops with employers. The tutors on the course have excellent links with industry professionals and students on the course will benefit from these working partnerships.

    • By Rail: Anyone travelling by train should disembark at Central Station in Warrington. Our Winwick Road Campus is around a 20 minute walk along the A49 (you will pass the Warrington Wolves RLFC stadium and the Tesco supermarket on your left).

      By Bus: Warrington & Vale Royal College is easily accessible by bus from the town centre and nearby Cheshire districts. Bus numbers* 19, 20, 21, 22 from the Warrington Bus Station to Winwick Road Campus.
