Further Mathematics A Level at Harris Academy Bromley
Starting in September 2017 all Year 12 students in Further Maths will study the new 2 year A Level which will consist of Further Pure Maths and two other specialisms. We are still waiting for any boards to be accredited in Further Maths and subsequently do not yet have any further information what the two extra specialisms might be.
All assessment will be at the end of Year 13 and will consist of three 2 hour papers.
Those students who pass the current Further Maths AS Level course (with an A - D grade at AS Level) in August 2017 will study A2 Further Mathematics. This is the last year of the modular A Level and the topics available are as follows:
Year 13 Further Mathematics
- Unit 7: Core 3
- Unit 8: Core 4
- Unit 9: Further Pure 2
- Units 10-12: Optional Units
- Statistics 1,2,3
- Mechanics 1,2,3,4,5
- Decision Maths 1,2
Students who want to study Further Mathematics at A Level will require a Level 8 at the new Mathematics GCSE. They will also have to choose A Level Maths as an option alongside Further Maths.
Exam Board: OCR
Students sit examinations in their A Level courses at the end of Year 13. All students will take internal end of year examinations at the end of year 12 to determine suitability to continue with the subject in Year 13. Students who do not meet the required pass grade in the Year 12 end of year examinations will not be permitted to progress into Year 13.
All of the units are examined by 1 hour 30 minute examination papers during the Summer Examination period. Students will also be allowed to retake any AS Modules.
A Level Mathematics is a much sought after and highly respected qualification, which can open doors to a wide range of Higher Education courses and rewarding careers. Higher Education courses that require A Level Mathematics include Economics, Teaching, Medicine, Psychology, Architecture, Science and Accountancy.
For those students wishing to pursue degree course in Mathematics, A Level Further Mathematics may be a requirement. Those interested in Engineering, will also find this a suitable course.
