Art, Craft and Design AS Level at Graveney School
The main purpose of any course in art, craft and design is to develop your ability to appreciate the visual world, respond in a personal and creative way and perhaps even contribute for the benefit of everyone. Work produced for this course will demonstrate the
use of visual language and creative skills, and will allow students to express their thinking, feelings, observations and ideas.
You will develop aesthetic understanding and critical judgement and demonstrate an independence of mind in developing, refining and communicating your ideas, and your own intentions and personal outcomes.
AS Level 1:
Personal Investigation: 50% of total qualification
Internally set /Internally marked / Externally moderated.
Incorporates 2 Major Elemants:
Supporting Studies and Practical Work.
This component allows students opportunities to generate and develop ideas, research primary and contextual sources, record practical and written observations, experiment with media and processes, and refine ideas towards producing resolved outcomes. Supporting studies and practical work will comprise a portfolio of development work and outcomes based on themes and ideas developed from personal starting points.
AS Level 2:
Externally Set Assignment: 50% of total qualification
Externally set/Internally marked/Externally moderated.
The externally set exam incorporates 2 major elements: Preparatory studies, and the 10 hour period of sustained focus.
Preparatory studies will comprise of a portfolio of practical and written development work based on the
Externally Set Assignment.
During the 10 hour period of sustained focus, students will produce final outcome(s) extending from their preparatory studies in response to the Externally Set
Assignment, under examination conditions.
There are many careers opportunities in Art, Craft and Design. Most of these will require further study at an Art School, further education or university. The Art department fully
supports this process and offers advice and guidance about the application process.
